Tile Calculator – Calculate Area & Determine Quantity
Before you order tiles, you should know how many square metres you really need — including wastage for cutting and breakage. Our free tile calculator does the maths for you: enter the area, choose the laying pattern, done.
How the tile calculator works
- Measure the area. Enter length × width of each area to be tiled in metres. Add the floor, walls and niches individually with "Add another area" — the calculator adds everything up automatically.
- Choose wastage. 10 % for straight laying, 12 % diagonal, 15 % for herringbone or chevron. This covers edge cuts and the occasional breakage.
- Apply the quantity. Enter the recommended m² figure for your chosen tile in the "Square metres" quantity option — done.
Frequently asked questions
How much wastage should I allow for?
As a rule of thumb, allow 10 % for straight laying, 12 % diagonal and 15 % for elaborate patterns such as herringbone or chevron. With lots of corners or niches, a few percent more is fine.
Why set aside a pack as a spare?
Tiles are produced in batches (kilns). If you reorder, the colour shade may differ slightly. A pack from the same batch is the cheapest insurance against visible patch repairs.
Can I calculate floor and wall together?
Yes. Add a separate row for each area (floor, each wall, niche). The calculator adds everything up and applies the chosen wastage to the total area.
